We farm for fun, education, and solidarity. Our ideal candidates would be into shared grazing, agroforestry &/or perennials production, as well as have an independent farm business plan they can implement on site. Housing is a possibility.

Quality of land

No chemicals used in at least six years. Vershire/Dummerston soil (basically means the dirts prime, but the bedrock sticks through in places). The topography rolls. There’s plenty flat and plenty slope, mostly in a hay lease right now.

Protected with conservation easement

Conservation easement

Conservation easement details

Typical Vermont Land Trust old-school ag easement. Means both residents can legally have an ADU, though VLT would kick and scream :), and both existing houses could be expanded to the limit of town zoning.

Current forest management plan

Farmer housing

Yes

Farmer housing details

We could be roommates or you could build an ADU and we’d have to figure out a buyout contingency for the ADU. Minted camping or nearby housing may be possible, too.

Water source for farm use

Available

Type of water source

Drilled well

Water source details

We’ve got a great well, but apparently all the data for many wells was lost in a flood in Waterbury a couple years ago. We have a stream running through the woods on our western border, and hope to dig a pond as part of our next phase of development.

Farm infrastructure

  • Barn/farm buildings
  • Greenhouses/high tunnels
  • Roadways

Description of farm infrastructure

We have $30K in USDA grants pending for fencing, water systems, and another $5-$15K for agroforestry. The 70x35 heifer barn is open on the gables, and the plastic melted off the 96x30 Ledgewood greenhouse when the adjacent barn burned down in ā€˜24. The 2 story shop building is 20x24, which is as far as we’ve gotten for barn replacement. We do have a big timber harvest recommendation and a foundation where the barn stood. Not much to brag about there.

Access to equipment

Available

Equipment details

We have a 1965 Massey Ferguson 2WD direct injection deisel that’s been largely rebuilt and a farm truck. We hope to sell the tractor and get a 4X4 tractor with a bucket.

Lease

Tenure arrangement details

We’re open to a handshake or a lease up to two years for a trial, which could be extended if it works out. The form above offered several options, a number of which were open to, but we could only pick one. Best if you just get in touch.
Ps - we’re not exactly a ā€œfarm familyā€, that was just the closest option.

We have a nursery with maybe 300 saplings left, several perennial gardens in various stages of upkeep, and a couple veggie gardens also in various stages of upkeep. I’m a carpenter and a community organizer from Vermont. We want to work with decent, experienced people and are open to multiple projects working here concurrently. I’m excited to help build infrastructure, share chores and move animals, work on value-added products and ideas, organize young people to come help and get some education, organize stay out of your hair.
