Description of farming experience

Hello, I returned to Vermont several years ago after starting and running a 30 acre vegetable + 200 acre grazing operation in Virginia.  I now grow a rotation of grains, dry beans, vegetables and pasture-raised eggs.  I'm looking for a long-term arrangement (sale or lease) on 40-60 tillable acres - though I'm open to larger/smaller depending on the details.  Ultimately I would like to integrate tree, vine, and other perennial crops into the farm.

I farm organically and emphasize interseeding cover crops and integrating pastured animals into the rotation.

In the meantime, I'm also open to leases of ~5 acres or more near where I currently farm in Fairlee, VT

Tenure arrangement description

I'm looking for a reliable, long-term arrangement.  That may be a sale or another binding agreement - but I want to know I can settle down into a place, take care of it, and make it my own.  I'm a good farmer, care about land I grow on, and want to cultivate a long-term relationship with my next farm.

I have certain equipment and high tunnel structures ready to raise. Access to additional equipment and infrastructure welcome, particularly covered space. Water infrastructure desirable, at least ability to easily develop water for irrigation. Housing preferred, but am open to creative housing solutions.

Farm enterprises description

I have a rotation of organic grains, popcorn, dry beans, vegetables, and pastured animals (poultry for eggs and sheep for meat).

The farm currently operates with three guiding principles: interesting specialty crops, limited scale, lean and mechanized production. Specialty grains including hard red spring wheat (unusual in the Northeast), corn for flour and popping, and rice are marketable at decent prices to a point – one reason to grow on a smaller scale for the time being.

I am a creative farmer and am committed to blending agriculture and conservation.  I farm organically and use tillage and cultivation to manage weeds, and also experimenting with reduced tillage strategies.  Over the years I've worked with universities, extension, and other farmers to conduct on-farm research and variety trials. I also work with other farmers and land owners as a consultant, in the US and overseas.  In 2020 I went back to school for an advanced degree in Agriculture and Rural Development and spent 2022 in Bhutan training young farmers.  I returned to Vermont in 2023, farming part-time and running the Conn River Watershed Farmers Alliance.
