Farm business ownership

Description of farming experience

I grew up farming in Pennsylvania before pursuing a management career in the ski industry, where I advanced to a senior leadership role overseeing staff, operations, and budgets. I later returned to agriculture and have owned and operated Slippery Slope Goats for the past five years, building a profitable meat goat and contract grazing enterprise. My earlier agricultural experience includes working on multiple dairy and beef farms, managing a commercial goat dairy, and consulting for cheese and dairy businesses. This combination of hands-on livestock experience and high-level management expertise allows me to run a disciplined, financially sound farm operation.

Tenure arrangement desired

Farm transfer

Tenure arrangement description

I am seeking a long-term tenure arrangement that provides stability and a clear path forward, ideally through an outright purchase or a structured lease-to-own agreement. I am also very interested in opportunities to transition a farm from an established farmer who is looking to retire. A gradual transfer that allows for knowledge sharing, continuity of the land’s legacy, and a smooth operational handoff would be highly valued. My goal is to create a permanent home for my business (and my family) while honoring the history and stewardship of the farm.

Forest/Foraging

Farm enterprises description

My farm enterprise is centered on a diversified, pasture-based livestock model. The primary focus is a meat goat operation supported by established markets and a strong customer base. In addition, I provide contract grazing services, utilizing targeted grazing to manage vegetation, improve pasture health, and generate consistent service-based revenue. The operation also includes a small grass-fed beef cattle enterprise that complements the goat business and enhances overall revenue stability. Together, these enterprises create a resilient, multi-stream income model built on regenerative grazing practices and efficient land use.

Written business plan

Yes

Business planning description

My business plan focuses on building a financially resilient, pasture-based livestock operation with diversified revenue from meat goats, contract grazing, and grass-fed beef. I am currently working with the Vermont Farm & Forest Viability Program to develop detailed financial projections, enterprise budgets, and a multi-year growth plan. This process includes cash flow planning, infrastructure investment analysis, and scaling strategies to ensure long-term profitability, stability, and responsible land stewardship.

Description of infrastructure needed

I am seeking infrastructure to support a 400-head meat goat operation, including well-ventilated barns with space for group pens, kidding areas, handling facilities, and winter shelter. Adequate dry hay storage is essential to hold a full winter’s supply and maintain feed quality. Additional covered storage is needed for tractors, feeders, and other equipment to protect assets and ensure efficient daily operations. Reliable water access throughout the property is also important to support herd health and productivity year-round.
