Description of farming experience

My approach to farming is deeply rooted in both practice and science. Since founding Phloem Flower Farm in 2022, I have been hands-on in the soil, growing cut flowers for my community. However, my passion for agriculture extends beyond the field; I am also a doctoral researcher in Environmental Studies, focusing specifically on cut flower agriculture. I love using my time in the dirt to inform my research, and using my research to grow better, more sustainable flowers. My agricultural experience has primarily been in cut flowers; I also worked in a greenhouse for 2 years.

Lease

Tenure arrangement description

For the past four years, my business has been based at my personal residence. We are looking to expand past our personal residence, to have more room to grow. Ideally, we are looking to start with a year-to-year lease. One of our long-term goals is to purchase a property, but we would like to lease it as we grow our business. We are looking for a place near Swanton, VT, to be close to our personal residence.

Planned farm enterprises: Others

Farm enterprises description

Phloem Flower Farm is a specialized cut flower operation established in 2022, dedicated to growing high-quality cut flowers, using a regenerative approach, and science-backed agricultural practices. I founded this business in tandem with my doctoral research studies in Environmental Studies, to bridge the gap between academic research and flower production. The main goal of my business is to share and research ecologically based cut flower growing practices.

Business planning description

We have been running a small-scale operation for the past 4 years. We are looking forward to expanding our cut flower production, with the main goals of wholesale, education, and research. The scale of our current operation has limited our economic growth potential, so having a larger area will allow us to expand our business.

Farmer housing needed

No

Water source needed

Yes

Farm infrastructure needed

  • Greenhouses/high tunnels

Description of infrastructure needed

Year one, we have the equipment that we need to run our business. However, in the future, it would be ideal to get a high tunnel.

Access to equipment needed

No

I started my cut flower farm in 2022 in Swanton, VT. My dream is to grow cut flowers and native plants for wholesale customers. I am a PhD student studying the environmental impacts of cut flower farming, and having a place to grow flowers, educate the community, and research environmentally friendly growing practices is my dream. Currently, our land size is the limiting factor to our growth. I currently work as a high school science teacher, but we hope to expand the business over the years so farming becomes our full-time profession.
