Description of farming experience

I’ve had 5 different part-time commercial farm jobs, done a work-trade with a commercial farm, lived for two years on a communal homestead, and WWOOFed at a variety of different places.

I currently work at Trillium Hill farm in Hinesburg, VT.

I have a Master's Degree in Food Systems from UVM.

Tenure arrangement description

I'm interested in purchasing land, and potentially open to purchasing a home and/or some farm infrastructure. I'd love to write up agreements to make sure the seller's vision and values are embedded in how I will care for the land. I'm not interested in purchasing an existing farm business.

Planned farm enterprise: Primary

Perennials/Orchard

Farm enterprises description

Market garden first, high tunnels for extended growing season.

Eventually adding orchard and berry brambles for envisioned you-pick operation.

Business planning description

Under our current economic system, commercial farming is typically precarious: we often fail to do right by the land, ourselves, and one another. Community gardens and homesteads grow food without so much economic pressure, but don't produce enough. We need a new model suited for these times. I'm planning a community farm where farmer-members each work 5-10 h/wk to run a hand-scale vegetable & fruit farm (15 ppl, 5 acre). The work would be without pay - the benefits would be physical/emotional/spiritual wellbeing and food for the year. We’d focus on a handful of storage-friendly crops and grow them using farm-scale systems. We’d sell enough to cover input costs, and barter with other farms.
