Seeking Lease-to-Own Farm Opportunity in Vermont

Highest level of farming experience

Description of farming experience

I am currently looking for a farm opportunity on a lease-to-own basis. I have two small children whom I would love to raise in a farming environment. Unfortunately, due to the high cost of land in California, this opportunity does not exist for us here.

I am planning a permanent move to Vermont and am seeking a situation where I can begin farming now while working toward ownership over time. My goals are to provide a sustainable lifestyle for my family, contribute to the local farming community, and eventually secure a place where my children can grow up learning the values of stewardship, hard work, and connection to the land.

Any lease-to-own opportunities, farm transfer interest

Farm enterprises description

The farm’s strength lies in its diversified structure, designed to balance seasonal cash flow, spread out risk, and appeal to multiple markets. Each enterprise—maple sugaring, vegetables, cut flowers, and value-added products—brings unique benefits and challenges. Together, they create a resilient business model capable of sustaining a family while building equity in a Vermont lease-to-own property.

Vegetable production will serve as the backbone of cash flow for the farm. In the first year, one to two acres will be cultivated with a diverse range of crops including greens, carrots, squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, beans, and storage crops.

Business planning description

1. Executive Summary

I am seeking a lease-to-own farm opportunity in Vermont to establish a diversified operation that integrates permaculture, maple sugaring, vegetable production, cut flowers, and small-scale cold storage.

The vision is to create a family farm where my two young children can grow up learning stewardship, hard work, and connection to the land. This farm will generate income through diversified products, strengthen the local food system, and eventually transition into permanent ownership.

2. Mission & Vision

Mission:
To cultivate a sustainable, family-centered farm that blends tradition and innovation—honoring Vermont’s maple and farming heritage

Farmer housing needed

Yes

Water source needed

Yes

Farm infrastructure needed

  • Barn/farm buildings
  • Fencing
  • Roadways
  • Electricity/power

Description of infrastructure needed

The vegetable and flower operations will require a blend of permanent and semi-permanent structures. A 30x48-foot hoophouse or greenhouse will serve dual purposes: providing a controlled environment for starting seedlings in early spring and extending the season for high-value crops like tomatoes or specialty flowers. Drip irrigation systems connected to a reliable water source—whether a well, pond, or surface stream—will provide efficient water management. A covered wash/pack station is also essential. Outfitted with stainless steel sinks, wash tables, and drainage, this space will allow produce and flowers to be cleaned, bunched, and packed to the highest standards for local markets
