I live in Burlington, Vermont, and I have a vegetable farm there. I also run a maple sugaring operation in PA.

Farm business ownership

Description of farming experience

I have owned a medium sized organic vegetable farm with others for 33 years. I have run a 2500 tap maple sugaring operation on my family’s land in Pennsylvania for 30 years.

Tenure arrangement desired

Tenure arrangement description

I am interested in the possibility of running a sugaring operation in Vermont closer to where I live. This could be for the production of sap only, or more desirably , for the production of the bottled finished product.

Planned farm enterprise: Primary

Planned farm enterprises: Others

Written business plan

No

Business planning description

My business would be to produce between 1000 and 2000 gallons of maple syrup that I would bottle for retail sale and sell them retail as well as to wholesale to accounts that I already have a relationship with through my family’s maple sugaring business.

Farmer housing needed

Yes

Water source needed

No

Farm infrastructure needed

  • Barn/farm buildings
  • Roadways
  • Electricity/power

Description of infrastructure needed

An existing sugarhouse with power that is accessible by road is important, although in the absence of these, I may still be interested in running a sap only operation

Access to equipment needed

Yes

Description of equipment needed

Existence of tanks, evaporator, reverse osmosis, and other equipment would be helpful.

I am looking for a situation that would be a good fit for me to start a maple syrup operation in Vermont. Existence of a sugarhouse and other equipment is a plus. Availability of housing is a plus, but not a necessity. I would like to have a long term lease, since there are substantial capital costs to installing tubing and other infrastructure.
