Description of farming experience

We’re beginning farmers from Oklahoma with 8+ years in sustainable farming, inspired by Joel Salatin’s models. Jen (Native American) had a Brangus herd of 25 cow-calf pairs on leased land, emphasizing grass-fed beef through rotational grazing to build soil health, biodiversity, and reduce inputs. Now focusing on expanding: rotational grazing for Brangus followed by pastured poultry for premium meat/eggs, promoting natural pest control and ecosystem resilience. We developed a full business plan, FSA-qualified for loans ($600k ownership + $400k operating), but deal fell through due to delays. Eager to apply skills in herd health, Land husbandry, and sustainability to scale in VT on 80+ acres

Tenure arrangement description

Our primary goal is to purchase 80+ acres in central/southern VT (Addison, Windsor, Rutland counties) using FSA loans as a socially disadvantaged beginning farm (Native-owned). We’re pre-qualified for $600k ownership + $400k operating. Open to long-term leases or lease-to-own for easier entry while building equity, especially conserved land with infrastructure. Flexible on partnerships with retiring farmers for mentorship/transition. Prioritizing sustainable stewardship and regenerative practices to ensure long-term viability.

Farm enterprises description

Our primary enterprise is regenerative livestock farming: grass-fed Brangus beef via rotational grazing (starting with 25 cow-calf pairs, expanding to 50+), followed by 800+ pastured Chickens for premium eggs/meat. Inspired by Joel Salatin, this multi-species model builds soil health, boosts biodiversity, controls pests naturally, and minimizes inputs for sustainable resilience. Secondary: Potential agroforestry (e.g., maple tapping) if land suits. Focus on local markets for beef/eggs, emphasizing Native-owned stewardship and ecosystem benefits.

Written business plan

Yes

Business planning description

Our written business plan outlines a regenerative farm startup: Year 1 focuses on infrastructure (fencing, water systems) and initial herd (25 Brangus cow-calf pairs) with rotational grazing to improve pastures. Year 2 adds 800+ pastures Chickens for quality meat and hens for eggs, targeting $50k revenue from grass-fed beef/eggs via farmers’ markets/CSAs. Projections: 5-year break-even with 20% growth, low inputs via sustainability. FSA-qualified ($600k ownership + $400k operating); includes marketing, risk management (e.g., climate resilience), and Native-owned priorities for grants.

Description of infrastructure needed

We prefer pre-existing farmer housing (e.g., modest home/cabin for immediate living) to launch operations smoothly, but we have a travel trailer for on-site stays while building if needed. Access to equipment would be nice, but not an dealbreaker. Essential: Water source (stream/pond/well for livestock/irrigation/testing). Also ideal: Barn/farm buildings (for equipment/hay/herd shelter), fencing (perimeter/rotational for grazing management), electricity/power (for pumps/lights/basic ops). Open to partial setups or raw land—our $400k FSA operating loan can fund buildouts like mobile coops/troughs, focusing on regenerative priorities.
