Quality of land:
Crop land and pastures have been farmed organically since 1993. Fertility has increased substantially over those years. Cropland is primarily Hinkley Sandy Loam, with good southern aspect. Organic matter ranges from 5.1% to 6%. Soils warm up and dry relatively quickly in the Spring. Increased organic matter has increased moisture holding capacity, but good irrigation and water conservation (mulching, drip irrigation, etc) seem to be essential for good crop production.
Pastures are Buckland Loam and over the past 6 plus years have been managed with a more deliberate grazing rotation primarily with cattle ( also poultry and occasionally sheep). Forage growth and diversity has increased significantly with this management.
