Farmer Profile for Kelin Underwood

Please describe your past and/or present farming experience

I grew up on a small farm in Maine that we built from scratch. From the time I was 3 years old, I was digging in the dirt. We also raised chickens, sheep, rabbits and pigs and later rescued a horse and baby goat. Living in this way, closely with the earth, growing food and learning with the seasons is part of who I am. Since I left the east coast to travel, I did some WOOFing out west and in the southwest. I later moved to the southwest where I went to school for bodywork therapy and natural medicine. We started some community garden projects, raised chickens and bees and help workshops and classes on the little 1/2 acre several of us rented/shared. I moved back east and have been searching for a good place to land and to root down. I now have a little boy who I am so excited to raise up in a collaborative and earth.centered environment; teaching and learning alongside him. I envision his life full of first-hand experience growing and harvesting food, cultivating community, living and practicing sustainable and creative ways of being, growing, learning and living in cohesive connection with the earth, animals and others . Since having this little being come into my world, it has become more and more important for me to find the right spot and place to begin realising my dream and vision for a farm. I have a diverse experience with farming and for me, the foundation of my farm project is one that stands on creating more of a connection with the earth, growing a wide variety of vegetables, creating a seed-saving library, and I'd love to have a farmstead full of vegetables grown and things made with vegetables/herbs grown on the farm. Along the path of this, one day I would love to hold workshops and classes, integrating my work with bodywork therapy- based on coming back to the body/coming back to the earth. Much of farming to me is about cultivating connection, community and sharing. Learning and sharing that knowledge and wisdom . I look forward to possibilities!
