Please describe your past and/or present farming experience
My husband and I have been in the restaurant business for over 25 years. We owned a restaurant in Baltimore, Maryland that was on the forefront of the farm-to-table movement. Before moving to Vermont at the beginning of 2020 to support Philo Ridge Farm's mission on the restaurant side, we ran a 19-room fly fishing inn in the Catskills, New York. For five years, there, I did all the farming and gardening, raising produce and herbs for the inn's kitchens, cut flowers for the inn and perennials and annuals for the inn's display gardens. In the past growing season, I farmed flowers here in Vermont focusing primarily on dahlias and hardy annuals. I am currently farming about 3/4 of an acre on the plot we have here. This season, I will grow over 100 dahlias and numerous annuals and perennials, mostly from seed. I am.a Master Gardener and am currently enrolled in the Floret Flower Farming online workshop. I've also studied floral design at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania.

We are currently farming on leased land and are in the process, this year, of obtaining a heated greenhouse and high tunnels. This equipment can be moved. We also own a BCS walk-behind tractor. So, while I listed a greenhouse, we will be able to supply our own. Barn is a plus, but not completely necessary.

I am currently working on a business plan and will upload it when I am finished. I'm partnering with a local graphic and branding company to design a logo and web site for my flower and herb farm, which will be called "Anam Cara," the Gaelic words for "Soul Friend," which is what the natural world has been to me. My long-term goals include developing the infrastructure to support a profitable, medium-sized flower and herb farm. I will sell local, organic market bouquets, memberships to subscription flowers or a CSA online and locally. I will also--eventually--develop and sell herbal products, such as tinctures and skin products. My goal is to study herbalism intensively after this first full growing season and to bring that knowledge to my venture.
