About This Website
Why this website? This site was created to help Vermont’s farm seekers and farm property holders find each other. For many new and established farmers, simply finding available land is a huge challenge. On the other side of the equation, more and more private, public and organizational landowners want to make land available for farming. They want farmers to find them.
This site makes it easy for properties to be posted, and for farm seekers to search for them. The site’s format is similar to “for sale by owner” sites or classified listings. Because it is free, simple, state-wide, automated and constantly current, it can serve as a friendly portal for Vermont property holders and farmland seekers.
Linking to agricultural support services. Seekers and property holders need information, skills and support to be successful, whether as tenants and landlords, buyers and sellers, managers and owners, or through other arrangements. Vermont Land Link is primarily a clearinghouse for farm properties, but it is also a gateway to educational resources and support services. The organizations that created this website believe that comprehensive property lists are necessary but not always sufficient to ensure successful transactions to get farmers on the land. For example, some organizations help screen properties and seekers, and pre-sort for potential matches. Others connect specific farmers and properties, educate and support seekers and owners, help craft agreements, and assist with transfer planning. Please visit our Resources page to access many other service providers and educational resources covering options and considerations in sustainable farmland tenure.
Raising money for farmland conservation and education. Underwriters' fees for Vermont Land Link are used to cover website operating costs and sponsor educational events for farm seekers and farm landowners. Please visit our Underwriters page for more information.
Vermont Farmland Access Network. We are organizations and programs that focus on farmland access and stewardship in Vermont. Together, we work as a network to uncover farmland tenure and business opportunities that might or might not be exposed on the open real estate market. We work directly with farm seekers to improve their chances for success once on the land. We work directly with landowners and retiring farmers searching for next generation farmers to continue Vermont's farming legacy.
As a consortium, we refer farmers and landowners to Vermont Land Link. This is a new endeavor. It is a work-in-progress. The site’s success depends in large part on its widespread use.
